RAMS DROP A PAIR IN SEASON-OPENING SATURDAY

THE BASICS
  • VCU opened its 2014 season with a pair of losses at Colorado State's Rams Invitational.
  • Freshman outside hitter Jessica Young led the Rams with 15 kills combined in Saturday's two contests.
  • The Rams will return to action on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara at 12:30 p.m. at Moby Arena.
MATCH #1 – COLORADO STATE 3, VCU 0
  • Young provided a team-best eight kills in the match for VCU, while senior Janelle Sykes added six and a pair of blocks.
  • VCU hit just .062 against 18th-ranked Colorado State. CSU, meanwhile, hit .304.
  • Senior setter Cecilia Aragao, making her return from a knee injury that cost her the second half of the 2013 season, handed out 20 assists and dug 10 balls.
  • The match was VCU's second trip to play a ranked Colorado State team in Fort Collins in five years.
MATCH #2 – MARQUETTE 3, VCU 0
  • Young was again a bright spot on offense for VCU, spiking a team-best seven kills. In two matches Saturday, she averaged 2.5 kills per set.
  • Aragao notched another double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs.
  • Marquette cruised to a 25-9 win in the first set, but VCU battled back in the second. A service ace by Kalah Jones knotted the frame at 16-all. A kill by Aragao a short time later pulled VCU within 18-17, but Marquette embarked on a 5-1 burst to take control.
  • Marquette hit .354 in the match, while VCU struggled to gain traction on offense, hitting -.088.

  • VCU is now 1-1 in openers under Jody Rogers
