RICHMOND – On the verge of possibly their first appearance in the Atlantic 10 title game since 2012, the VCU Women’s Soccer team was honored for a strong season Wednesday afternoon. Senior Megan Dell was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, while freshman Lyndsey Gutzmer was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. The awards were announced by the conference office. 

Dell, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., has been a mainstay on defense for the Rams since 2014. Over 76 career games, she has never missed a start, scoring nine career goals and recorded four assists for a career total of 22 points. In 2017, she has put up a career-high 10 points, scoring four goals and two assists. Two of those came in clutch fashion Sunday afternoon in VCU’s 2-1 win at George Mason in the A-10 Quarterfinals. Dell is an honor’s student at VCU, majoring in Biomedical Engineering, also minoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. She has made the Dean’s List six times, finishing her career with a 3.82 GPA. 

Gutzmer, a freshman from Henrico, Va., burst on the scene early this season recording points in each of her first three games of her collegiate career with a goal and two assists. She would finish the season with three goals and three assists, recording two game-winning goals. Her biggest one came in a 2-1 victory in double overtime over Rhode Island on October 19 at Sports Backers Stadium. Her nine points on the season tied for third on the team in points with Amanda Tredway. 

Earning A-10 Player of the Year was Alexis Kiehl from Dayton, while Defensive Player of the Year went to Alli Klug from Saint Louis. Midfielder of the Year went to Linnea Faccenda of Duquesne, while Olivia Petit from Saint Louis was named Rookie of the Year. Earning Coach of the Year honors was La Salle’s Paul Royal, as the Explorers enter the A-10 Tournament with the best record in the league and are the top seed headed into the semifinal round.   

The Rams will face Saint Joseph’s in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals at Sports Backers Stadium on Friday evening at 4:30 p.m.
