Monica Sgritta

Sgritta joined VCU's coaching staff in the summer of 2014 and made an immediate impact, helping guide the Rams to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Championships in 2015 and 2016. 

In 2015, Sgritta was an integral part of Cindy Chala's top-75 ITA ranking and berth in the NCAA Singles Championship. Under her guidance, the Rams have earned eight All-Conference accolades in two seasons, including Chala's A-10 Most Outstanding Performer citation in 2015 and Anna Rasmussen's A-10 Rookie of the Year award in 2016.  

Prior to her arrival at VCU, she spent three seasons at UCONN, guiding the Huskies in competitive Big East conference. She also served as an assistant coach of the men and women's tennis programs at Indiana University- Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). At IPFW, she led the women's team to the 2010 and 2011 Summit League regular season and tournament titles, as well as, the 2009 regular season championship.

As a student-athlete, Sgritta (nee Purice) played tennis at the No.1 and No. 2 spots in singles and doubles at Oklahoma. She graduated with a degree in social science and organization studies in 2008 and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll as a senior.

Sgritta's coaching experience extends to several youth and adult clubs. She previously served at Stamford Yacht Club in Stamford, Conn., the Tennis Instructor at Lifetime Sports Academy in Fort Wayne, Ind. and at The Bridges Family Resort and Tennis Club. At the amateur level, Purice competed and coached in her native Romania and was ranked in the top-5 in 2003-04.
