Owusu Sekyere was hired as an assistant coach in June 2024. He returns to VCU for his second stint on head coach Lindsey Martin's staff after previously serving as a volunteer assistant from 2021-22. Prior to his second stint at VCU, Sekyere served as an assistant coach at fellow Atlantic 10 program George Mason in 2023.
During his first stint at VCU, he helped put together a successful campaign as the Rams captured the program's first Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship since joining the league and tying a school record with nine consecutive wins on the way to a 13-4-0 record. In his second season on staff, VCU had another successful season and earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with an 8-3-8 record.
Holding a USSF "B" License, Sekyere served as the Director of Camps and Technical Training for the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club from 2020 - 2023. His focus was on establishing and overseeing the technical training program to enhance players' technical proficiency at all levels. He managed the Richmond Kickers camp programs and served as a youth coach in the club's Elite travel program from 2015 - 2023.Â
Sekyere's playing experience is a testament to his deep understanding of the game. As a four-year starter for the VCU from 2006-09, he saw action in 63 games, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists as a midfielder. After his time at VCU, he signed with the USL PRO side Charlotte Eagles for the 2014 season, making 28 appearances. Following his season in Charlotte, he signed with the USL Championship side Richmond Kickers, where he played from 2015 - 2018 and made 96 appearances.
