Martin Baker

Marty Baker will enter his fifth season with VCU's Women's Soccer program in the 2023 season after joining the staff in 2019. Baker serves as the goalkeeper coach for VCU's talented goalkeeper corps. Baker helped guide the Rams to a 37-17-13 record in his first four seasons.

In 2022, Baker coached goalkeeper Whitney Horton, who recorded eight shutouts, which was third most in the conference, and helped the Rams to an 8-3-8 record. Horton won A-10 defensive player of the week twice and had a goal-against average of .855. Horton had previously never started a game till her senior season, when she then ranked fourth in the nation in total minutes, starting every match for VCU.

In 2021, VCU won the Atlantic 10 regular season championship after compiling a 13-4-0 overall record and a 9-1-0 mark in conference play. The Rams also tied a program record with nine straight wins. Baker coached starting keeper Grace Young, who was first-team All-Atlantic 10 and started every game. She recorded six shutouts on the season, third-most in the conference.

In the Spring 2021 season, Young was named second-team all-conference after she posted three shutouts in six starts.

In Bakers first season, he coached Young five shutouts in 11 starts.

The Knoxville native joined the VCU Women's Soccer staff after a successful stint as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2018.

In 2018, Baker helped guide the Vols to the program’s first-ever NCAA Quarterfinal appearance, as UT finished the season 16-3-3 overall. Tennessee’s strong defensive play limited opponents to a program-best 15 goals allowed, while the Vols’ 12 shutouts matched a Tennessee record that has stood since 2003.

Baker joined UT's staff in the spring of 2017 as a graduate manager before being elevated to volunteer assistant in the fall. He helped coach the Vols to a 15-4-2 record as UT made its first NCAA Tournament since 2012.

As a player, Baker spent the past few summers with the Knoxville Force of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). The goalkeeper helped guide the club to the playoffs for first time in 2016 before winning the Southeast Division and setting a team record for wins in 2017.

A dual-graduate of the University of Tennessee, Baker earned his bachelor's degree in Sport Management in 2010, before receiving his master's degree in the same discipline in 2017. He is also a graduate of Knoxville Catholic High School where he was named an All-District goalkeeper.
