Darren Guensch

Darren Guensch enters his second season as an assistant and fourthoverall with the VCU Women's Basketball program in 2011-12. After spending his first two seasons as VCU's Director ofBasketball Operations, Guensch was promoted to an assistantcoaching role on June 17, 2010.  Since joining the Rams' staffin 2008-09, he has been a part of the most successful run inprogram history, helping guide the Black & Gold tothree-straight postseason appearances including a run to the thirdround of the WNIT in 2010.

“I feel very blessed for the opportunity to be a part ofthe VCU Women's basketball program,” said Guensch. “Since joining the VCU family in 2008, I've beenimpacted by many players and coaches that define what our programis all about.  I'm ready to do whatever I can to help CoachCunningham, our staff and our team continue our journey towardsexcellence on the court and in the classroom.”

Guensch also spent time as the Director of Women's BasketballOperations at Colonial Athletic Association rival George MasonUniversity from 2006-08.

Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Guensch served as headcoach of the freshmen girls’ basketball team at LoudounCounty High School in 2005-06, where he was also an assistant forthe varsity squad.  He guided the freshmen to a 16-2 record,including a 14-game winning streak, and helped the varsity teamcapture district and regional titles, and an appearance in theVirginia state Final Four.  Guensch also coached in theLoudoun Freedom AAU program during the spring and summer of2006.

“Darren has been an integral part of our success the lastthree years,” VCU Head Coach Beth Cunningham added. “His promotion last season was well-deserved and I lookforward to what he will continue to bring to our program.  Hehas earned the respect and confidence of our staff andstudent-athletes and is certain to be a valuable up-and-comingyoung coach.”

During the summer of 2005, Guensch completed an internship withPush the Rock, a Christian sports ministry based in Emmaus,Pa.  He coached at its basketball camps and volunteered in theoffice.

Guensch graduated from Radford University in 2005 with aBachelor of Science in Exercise, Sport and Health Education. He resides in Richmond, Va., with his wife, Devon and newborn son,Miles David.
