RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Women's Basketball will host Charlotte in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. It marks the ninth postseason tournament appearance in program history.
The Rams earned the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the 64-team WNIT after finishing as Atlantic 10 Regular Season Co-Champions for the first time in program history. VCU was the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the A-10 Championship game. The WNIT has 32 automatic bids and 32 at-large bids.
VCU is currently 23-9 overall and finished A-10 play with a record of 13-3. It was the first time in program history the Rams claimed at least a share of the regular season conference title and the No. 1 overall seed for the conference tournament.
Charlotte currently boasts an 18-12 overall record and went 9-7 in Conference USA play. They were the No. 7 seed in the C-USA Tournament. The winner will advance to play the winner of Virginia Tech/Furman.
It marks the Rams' seventh appearance all-time in the WNIT under its current iteration and second under this season's Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Beth O'Boyle. O'Boyle also guided VCU to an appearance in the 2016 WNIT Tournament.
Overall, the Rams have participated in the 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016 WNIT Tournaments. VCU also participated in the postseason NWIT in 1995, a prior and different iteration than the current WNIT. The Rams' best finish in the WNIT is two third round appearances, one in 2010 and one in 2012.
It will be the third WNIT game hosted by VCU and the second first round matchup. VCU hosted a first round WNIT game in 2016 against Virginia. The Rams also hosted a second-round game against Hofstra in 2010.
Tickets will go on sale at the VCU Athletics Ticket Office at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. Tickets are $7. Students can show their VCU ID at the door to obtain a ticket.
