RICHMOND, Va. – Indiana is known around the country for its basketball prominence, but it is track & field that will be taking over the state this upcoming weekend.

Among those track & field athletes will be rising sophomore Brandon Ruffin of the VCU men's program, competing in the 2012 U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Ruffin, a Chesapeake, Va. native, will be competing in both the discus and shot put.

The USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships bring together the cream of the crop of American junior athletes, which range from 14-19 years old.

Ruffin is coming off one of the best freshman seasons in VCU track history, picking up five total victories and eight top-three finishes. He broke the school record in the discus and is currently ranked second in school history in the outdoor shot put and third in the indoor shot put.

He was the CAA Champion in the shot put and second in the discus, scoring a total of 18 points for his team. His throw of 55' 22 ¾" to win the shot put at the CAA meet ranks as the eighth best junior mark in the country with a 16-pound shot put.

The meet will serve as a qualifier for this year's IAAF World Junior Championships. Top performers will be part of the American team that will compete in Barcelona, Spain from July 10th to July 15th.
