RICHMOND, Va. -  With less than a month left before the CAA Championships, the VCU men’s and women’s track teams have positioned themselves to be a threat to take home a title come the first weekend in May.

Nearly 30 Rams sit in the top-five of the CAA outdoor performance lists, including 11 that have posted one of the top two performances in their events so far this spring.

Three freshmen have put together quite a debut season on the men’s side with sprinter Darius Vaughn and throwers Brandon Ruffin and Ryan Coles.

Vaughn ranks in the top-10 in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. His time of 21.97 in the 200m is the second-best time in the CAA this spring, while his time of 11.06 is the eighth-best time in the 100m.

He has also been a critical part of both the 4x100 (42.67) and 4x400 (3:15.81) meter relay teams that have the third-best times in those events.

Ruffin finds himself ranked second in both the shot put and discus. His toss of 52’ 4 ¾” in the shot put at the Fred Hardy Invite and his throw of 165’ 10” in the discus at the Ram Invite have him positioned to score big time points for the Black & Gold in a few weeks.

Coles ranks in the top-five in both the shot put and discus as well. His toss of 49’ 5 ½” is the third-best mark in the shot put, while his throw of 155’ 3” in the discus sits fifth on the list.

VCU’s own set of the Williams sisters are having quite a spring as well with both sophomores ranking in the top-five in both the shot put and discus this spring.

Jaleesa Williams has the top distance in the shot put with a mark of 45’ 6 ½”, while also ranking fifth in the discus with a toss of 142’ 2”. Jessica Williams has the second-best toss in the discus at 149’ 2” and fifth-best mark in the shot put at 42’ ¾”.

Freshman Kiara Porter continues to impress in her first season with the Black & Gold, ranking in the top-four in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Her time of 53.98 in the 400m is the top time in the CAA, while her time of 24.03 in the 200m is fourth-best.

She’s also been a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay squads that have two of the top marks in the conference this spring, both of which came last weekend at the Florida Relays. The 4x100 squad posted the CAA’s best time of 45.47, while the 4x400 squad’s time of 3:44.93 is the second-best time this spring.

Also on the 4x100 squad was junior Dionna Hayes, who has the top time in the CAA in the 100-meter dash this spring at 11.75, which also took place at this past weekend’s Florida Relays.

The other Ram who has the top spot in the CAA this spring is sophomore Chaneka Perry, who’s leap of 39’ 8 ¾” in the triple jump leads the conference.

VCU will get a little preview of the CAA Championship meet this weekend with a Saturday appearance at the Mason Invitational, the same location of the conference meet in May.
