RICHMOND, Va. – Longtime rivals VCU and Virginia – the three-time defending National Champions - are headed for a New York-sized showdown in the Big Apple.
The Rams and Cavaliers will face off on Friday, May 11 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Billy Jean King Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. It'll be the 28th all-time meeting between the two schools, including the fourth in the NCAA Tournament.
Host Columbia will play Monmouth on the other side of the bracket. Match times will be released later.
VCU (16-9), making its 22nd NCAA appearance all-time, swept into the tournament following a 4-1 win over Dayton in Sunday's Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Match in Orlando, Fla. It was the Rams second straight A-10 title.
There are no seniors on VCU's roster, and the Rams have been led by juniors Arvid Noren and Vitor Lima, sophomores Javier Amantegui and Ignacio Rivero Crespo, as well as freshman Inigo Torre Martin, who is a team-best 18-6 in singles action.
While the Cavaliers (13-12) have graduated a great deal of talent the last three years, Virginia does still boast 26th-ranked Carl Soderlund on the No. 1 court and 46th-ranked Aswin Lizen at No. 2.
