"Getting to Know" is a weekly feature on VCUathletics.com that will highlight student-athletes from the 17 intercollegiate athletic programs that make up "Ram Nation."
Each edition, VCU Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant Blaze Byrd chats with selected student-athletes from various programs to get inside their world and let us know a little more about them.
This edition of GTK features senior Michal Voscek of the men's tennis team. The Bratislava, Slovakia native plays at the #1 singles slot for the Rams and has recorded a 9-2 record this season, with one of those losses to the first ranked player in the nation. His overall record in his two seasons with the Rams is now 30-16.
With the season in full swing, Voscek and his teammates are gearing up for their matchups when they host N.C. State (10 a.m.) and Howard (4 p.m.) this Friday, February 27 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center inside the HDL, Inc. Athletic Village. He was nice enough to take a few minutes with Byrd to give us a little more of an in-depth look at himself.
How did you decide VCU was the right place for you?
I really liked the tennis program here at VCU. I also wanted to continue studying the same major (Urban & Regional Studies) as I did in Slovakia.
What are your goals for this season (personally and for the team)?
My personal goal is to be ranked in NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Ranking at the end of the season. For the team, the main goal is to win a conference and get in the NCAA tournament.
What is your favorite athletic moment at VCU?
Winning the A-10 Conference Title my freshman year in 2013.
What is your favorite class that you've taken at VCU?
I really liked my Urban & Regional Studies capstone with Dr. Damian Pitt, where I was able to use all of the knowledge learned in all of the other classes. My favorite class right now is independent study with Professor James Smither, where I am focusing on designing areas in the urban environment.
Beyond sports, where do you see yourself in ten years?
As an independent, young professional, doing something I feel good about.
What is one thing many people do not know about you?
I can speak multiple languages.
Is there a professional athlete, or former player, whose skills you emulate?
When I was younger I was really impressed by the serve of Andy Roddick and for a while I was trying to copy the motion and technique of the serve.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet and why?
Nicola Tesla for his outstanding knowledge and intelligence.
