RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU Men's Soccer team wrapped up its spring season on Saturday with a pair of matches at Sports Backers Stadium, drawing with Virginia 1-1 this morning and defeating Liberty 3-0 in the nightcap.

"I thought today was a solid wrap up for the spring season," said VCU head coach Dave Giffard. "We finished with a hard fought 3-0 victory against a good Liberty team who played in last year's NCAA tournament. The first 45 minutes of the morning game with UVA sharp and we were unlucky that we didn't go into the break up three or four goals. I was very disappointed with our second half against UVA as we started to lose our way a little bit as we became fatigued. Although we dominated the game, we were only able to manage a 1-1 draw. I think the shots finished 15-3, but we stopped doing the things that were making us so successful the first 45 minutes. We need to learn to trust in what we do and have the confidence to keep connecting passes when the game gets tight and not look for the killer pass too often. Overall though, these past three months have been a critical period of growth for this team and our program. We aren't where we need to be yet, but we are very close."

In the first game against Virginia, midfielder Nate Shiffman recorded the Rams' only goal off an assist from defender Juan Monge Solano.

Goalkeeper Andrew Wells played the full 90 minutes in between the pipes for the Black & Gold.

In the second match against Liberty, defender Peter Lee scored an unassisted goal to get the Rams on the board. VCU forward Kharlton Belmar tallied the second and third goals, with the assists coming from midfielder Devon Fisher and Lee.

Goalkeepers Clark Hankins and Garrett Cyprus split time in the net.
