VCU Men's Soccer Head Coach Dave Giffard announced the addition of Volunteer Assistant Coach Matthew Poma to the coaching staff prior to the 2026 season.
Poma, who will serve as the goalkeepers coach, joins VCU from Richard Bland College where he was an Assistant Coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. He helped lead the Statesmen’s women’s team to new heights, reaching the first Region 10 Championship Final in program history in 2024 and hosting the first playoff game program history in 2025 with the Region 10 Semifinal.
In each of his seasons at Richard Bland, Poma coached an All-Conference goalkeeper, as Emily Orn earned first-team honors in 2024 and Piper Whitney was named to the second team in 2025.
His first collegiate coaching position was at Wyoming, where he served as a volunteer for two seasons (2022-23). Poma assisted the Cowgirls in achieving their first-ever Mountain West Regular Season Championship, earning the top seed in the conference tournament and advancing to the Mountain West title match in 2022.
Prior to Wyoming, Poma served as a coach for Spotswood High School (2020-22) and spent time in youth coaching (2019-22) while attending James Madison University.
A native of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Poma played goalkeeper with Virginia Olympic Development Program (ODP) and Spotswood High School before beginning his coaching journey.
