While working on the press release to announce the completion ofhis newly aligned coaching staff last April, Head Coach Shaka Smartused the word, “superstar” to describe Kyle Getter.
It’s tough to find anyone that willargue against that description of him.
After just one year with the Rams, Getterhas become a favorite of anyone around VCU athletics because of hisorganization and incredible ability to relate to people.
”I’ve known Kyle for 12 yearsand have always been impressed with his work ethic, his loyalty andhis ability to relate to all personalities,” Smart said.“Kyle’s diligence and attention to detail will make hima tremendous asset to this program.”
Entering his second year at VCU,Getter’s duties will be wide-ranging and will includescheduling, travel, team meals, practice schedules, class schedulesand team camps.
“I am very humbled and excited atthe chance to work with Coach Smart and the rest of thestaff,” Getter commented. “VCU has a great basketballtradition and my family and I are very blessed at the opportunityto become part of it.”
The road to Richmond for Getter and hisfamily had many stops along the way, a list that includesLynchburg, Va., North Canton, Ohio, Huntington, W. Va, Dayton, Ohioand Hanover, Ind.
Prior to joining the Black & Gold, hespent the 2008-09 campaign as an assistant coach at LibertyUniversity. He helped guide the Flames to a 23-12 record and anappearance in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Prior to Liberty, he was the topassistant at Walsh College in Ohio, where he helped the Cavaliersto a 26-5 record and a run into the Second Round of the NAIADivision II National Tournament.
In addition to having collegiate coachingexperience, Getter also has several years of basketball operationsduties under his belt.
Before Walsh, Getter spent two years as the Director of BasketballOperations at Marshall University under Head Coach Ron Jirsa. While there, he was responsible for film exchange, video editing,team travel, recruiting, supervising player academics, overseeingthe daily operations of the basketball office and coordinating TheMarshall Thundering Herd Basketball Camp.
“[Kyle] possesses an incredibleability to pay attention to all the details, and relate to alltypes of people. That’s why we knew he would be good for thejob,” Jirsa said.
Getter also spent tine under head coachOliver Purnell, the current head coach at Clemson University, atthe University of Dayton. In addition, he worked with PaulBiancardi at Wright State.
His time at Dayton was where his longfriendship with Smart started, under Purnell. It was in 2002-2003,Getter’s first year at the Division I level, that the Flyerscaptured the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship, and finished theyear with a Top 25 ranking in the ESPNU/USA Today and AP Polls.
Getter received his undergraduate degreein physical education from Hanover College (Ind.). While atHanover, he served as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coachfrom 1999-2002. He helped the team earn a three-year record of60-18 and two HCAC championships. Before attending Hanover, Getterplayed two seasons at Centre College in Kentucky.
Along with his knowledge of basketball,Getter has talents on the links as well and served as themen’s golf coach at Walsh and the women’s golf coach athis alma mater Hanover College.
Getter and his wife, Michelle, live in GlenAllen with their son, William.
