Brendan Phelps joined VCU Men's Basketball as chief of staff in April of 2025 following a pair of successful seasons alongside Phil Martelli Jr. at Bryant.
Previously, Phelps served as an assistant coach for Martelli at Bryant from 2023-25, where he helped lift the Bulldogs to back-to-back 20-win seasons, including a 2025 America East Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2024-25 Bryant squad set a program Division I record with 23 wins and featured America East Player of the Year Earl Timberlake and Newcomer of the Year Barry Evans.
Phelps joined Bryant after serving as the head coach at Berlin High School in Connecticut during the 2022-23 season. Prior to that, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Post University. Post won a combined 39 games over his final two seasons.
While at Post, Phelps served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for Marc Kuntz from 2018-22. Post set a program record with 19 regular season wins during the 2019-20 campaign, and finished second nationally in rebounds per game, sixth in offensive rebounds, eighth in blocks and ninth in field goal defense. Post's 2021-22 squad upped the ante, winning a program record 20 regular season games, a CACC North Division title and finished ranked in the top 25 regionally for the first time in program history. Phelps played a pivotal role in developing Devonte McCall, who went on to earn Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and All-America honors.
Prior to Post, Phelps served as the associate head coach of Saint Paul Catholic High School (Bristol, Conn.) for 13 seasons. Saint Paul qualified for the postseason in 12 straight seasons, including three state semifinals and four quarterfinal appearances in Class S/M. Phelps was also a standout player at Saint Paul during his high school days. He was named to All-NWC First Team and named honored as an All-State player by The Hartford Courant, New Haven Register and the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
Phelps served as the Director of CT Passion Basketball AAU Club for ten years, where he saw 30 players go on to play college basketball at all three levels of the NCAA. Phelps was the lead recruiter for the program and also served as a head coach for the U17 team.
As the Director of Showcase and Regional Series Events Basketbull LLC in Springfield, Mass., Phelps organized high school showcases as well as NCAA certified live AAU tournaments. He also worked the New England Recruiting Report as a tournament site director and player analyst.
