RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Men's Basketball guard JeQuan Lewis was named Virginia Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week this week for his performance on the court in a matchup against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders on Saturday, Dec. 17.
The Dickson, Tennessee native was the Rams' top producer on Saturday night as he led the Black and Gold to an 80-77 victory over the visiting Blue Raiders. Lewis exploded for 20 points and shot 3 of 4 from the line in just 21 minutes of playing time. The game on Dec. 3 against Illinois was the only time he played fewer minutes. He ran the court for 20 minutes in that game.
"I was excited," said Lewis. "I wanted to compete and just do what I needed to do to help my team win."
Lewis is familiar with this kind of output. Saturday's game was the fourth time this season in which Lewis torched opposing defenses with 20 or more points.
"I was more aggressive," Lewis said about his mindset going into the game. "I have to do a good job of being more aggressive early on in the game. It helps getting the game going at our pace."
The Rams have two more games on their non-conference slate before heading to George Mason on Dec. 30 to open Atlantic 10 play.
"We want to finish the non-conference season strong. It's been a hard one so we want to finish strong going into George Mason."
