NEWPORT NEWS, Va—It may still be the preseason, but Rams fans have some postseason news to get excited about today.
The Atlantic 10 men's basketball tournament will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 2017 and Washington, D.C. in 2018. The CONSOL Energy Center and the Verizon Center, respectively, will host the postseason tournament. With this announcement, the locations for the event are now secured through 2021.
Pittsburgh has history with the A-10, as it hosted the conference tournament from 1978-82. 2018 will be the first time Washington has ever hosted the tournament. Both arenas have hosted multiple NCAA Tournament regional rounds, so each venue will be prepared for the high level of basketball the A-10 has to offer.
"The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting," stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "CONSOL Energy Center and Verizon Center are two state-of-the-art venues with great fan amenities and successful histories of hosting NCAA Men's Basketball Championship events. Bringing the A-10 Championship and brand to Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. is another nod to the strength and value of the conference."
VCU has enjoyed success in its short history in the A-10, making the championship game each of the past two seasons. Prior to that, the Rams won the last two CAA tournaments that they appeared in, so conference tournament triumphs are nothing new to this program. Now, however, they'll be able to showcase postseason Havoc in two new cities.
Washington, D.C., is the eighth largest media market in the country and Pittsburgh, Pa., ranks 23rd nationally. Atlantic 10 institutions reside in states that comprise 33.3 million television viewers, 28.8 percent of the total national market. There are eight A-10 institutions in the top 25 media markets in the country. National television coverage for the 2017 and 2018 Championships will be distributed by ESPN, CBS Sports and NBCSN.
