PENG, VAGBERG LEAD VCU CHARGE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WEEK

The short story: For the second straight week, sophomores Ian Peng and Adrian Vagberg contended for an individual crown to lead VCU.

FIRST TEE

  • Peng began Tuesday's final round with a share of the lead and shot a 1-under 71 on the way to a third-place finish. He was 10-under for the 54-hole tournament and catapulted up the leaderboard he fired a 7-under 65 during Monday's second round. He has recorded four top-five finishes in a little over a year as a Ram
  • Vagberg placed seventh overall at 7-under. He weathered a mid-round rain shower to record a pair of birdies, and he also eagled the 535-yard 12th hole
  • Behind its sophomore duo, VCU placed fifth in the tournament at 19-under par. Old Dominion (-28) claimed the team title by a single stroke over Virginia Tech (-27) after recording Tuesday's best round (-11). James Madison (-24) placed third, followed by Maryland (-23)
  • Juniors Sachin Kumar (T29th) and Kristian Tannum Donaldson (T32rd), as well as sophomore Clifford Foster (T45th) rounded out the VCU lineup

  • VCU led the field in par 5 scoring (4.68). Peng led all individuals in that category (4.25)

NOTABLE

  • Peng's and Vagberg's performances came one week after placing second and sixth, respectively at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. The Rams claimed the team championship in that event and set a program 54-hole scoring record
  • Peng's first six rounds of the fall have included a pair of 65s and a 67. He and Vagberg have shot par or better in all six
  • In Peng's last four tournaments, dating back to last spring, he has finished second twice, third and 14th. He has shot in the 60s in six of his last 12 collegiate rounds
  • Vagberg has recorded four eagles this season
