RICHMOND, Va. – VCU's Alston Newsom (Chesapeake, Va.) is staying sharp during the summer.
The rising junior fired a second-round 64 on the way to a runner-up finish at the Eastern Amateur over the weekend at the Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club in Portsmouth, Va. Newsom (-11) finished five strokes off the pace of UNC Greensboro's Nick Lyerly, who opened with a blistering 63 and coasted to a wire-to-wire victory.
Newsom carded an even-par 70 in the first round, and then hit his stride, shooting 64-67-68 in the final three rounds. He shared runner-up honors with Tripp Summerlin of Appalachian State.
In two seasons at VCU, Newsom has logged started seven tournaments for the Rams and has logged 34 competitive rounds. Last season, he recorded a career-best 21st-place finish at the Cape Fear Intercollegiate March 11-12 at Cape Fear National.
Newsom is one of three Rams set to return to the VCU lineup in 2018-19.
