Lanto Griffin, the CAA Golfer of the Year as a junior for VCU in 2009, qualified for the 118th U.S. Open Monday.

A Blacksburg, Va. native, Giffin shot 65 and 69 Monday in a sectional qualifier at Ridway and Colonial country clubs in Memphis, Tenn. to secure one of 11 U.S. Open spots up for grabs. Griffin, who finished fourth overall, played bogey-free golf for the first 31 holes of the qualifier.

The 118th U.S. Open will be played June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southhampton, N.Y.

Griffin, 29, earned his PGA Tour card in August and is in the midst of his rookie season on tour. He finished 20th on the Tour money list in 2017 and won the Nashville Golf Open that season.

In January, Griffin placed 12th at the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif.

As a collegian, Griffin led the Rams in scoring in back-to-back seasons (2009, 2010). He also spearheaded VCU's 2009 CAA Championship squad and helped steer the Black & Gold to NCAA berths in 2009 and 2010.
