Richmond, Va. – Sophomore catcher Josh Simon was named the Virginia Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the Rams' five wins last week. During the stretch, Simon played a crucial role in wins over Iona, Lafayette, and an East Carolina team that was ranked 17th in the country at the time.
Simon went 1-for-2 with an RBI in a 3-0 shutout over East Carolina. He was also hit by a pitch, and reached on a walk. The following day, in an 8-6 win over Lafayette Simon went 3-for-4.
Although the second-year catcher likes to focus more on his defensive play, Simon says his confidence in the field has transferred to the batter's box. "As I'm catching well it will just keep me in the right mindset when I get up to the plate," Simon said. "I've just been relaxing and having fun with it."
Over the weekend, Simon recorded an RBI during a three-game home series in which the Gaels were held to five total runs.
The Laurel, Md. product appeared in just 21 games last season. As a sophomore, he's beginning to find his place among the regular rotation. "In the beginning of the season I felt like I was always trying to do too much. I was worrying about numbers. Now that we're on a roll I just feel like I need to do my job," said Simon. "Defensively, I'm working really well with the pitchers right now, just helping them keep pounding the zone. They're on a roll."
The Rams are now on a nine-game winning streak that began on March 7. During that stretch, Simon is hitting .352. "Everyone has confidence in each other, and that just helps when I come in after an at-bat. Everyone has my back and it's awesome, everyone having confidence in each other," Simon said.
