RICHMOND, Va. – Coming off a season to remember after an A-10 Championship and first-ever Super Regional appearance in program history, the VCU Baseball team has been picked to finish second as named by the Atlantic-10 Conference Preseason Poll released on Thursday afternoon.
The Rams received 148 four first-place votes, coming in only behind Saint Louis who was picked to take the top spot with 161 points and received seven first-place votes. The only other team receiving top votes was Rhode Island, who was picked third and received two first place votes.
Rounding out the top five was Richmond and George Washington, followed by Davidson, Saint Joseph's, Fordham, George Mason, LaSalle, Dayton, Massachusetts, and St. Bonaventure.
VCU returns eight of its nine from the starting lineup from 2015, led by senior Matt Davis and junior Logan Farrar. Both upperclassmen will be looked upon for leadership in the order that finish ranked in the top 20 offenses in the country at the conclusion of last season.
Sophomore Sean Thompson leads a pitching staff that suffered the most turnover, losing four of their most reliable arms from a year ago. However, Thompson thrived in pressure situations as a freshman, providing a solid 5.1 inning effort in clinching the Dallas Baptist regional.
The team opens their season next weekend, as they will take on Kennesaw State on the road on Friday, Feb. 19 with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Fans will get their first taste of action this season on Wednesday, Feb. 24 when the Black and Gold take on Maryland at The Diamond at 3 p.m.
