RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Brooks Vial had himself a phenomenal last seven days, as he pitched two fine games that earned him a selection as the Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 7, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
The award comes as the second accolade earned this season by the Rams pitching staff, as fellow hurler Sean Thompson was selected for the honor last week, giving the Black and Gold the recognition in as many weeks.
Vial put himself in line for a selection with his performance in last Monday's showdown against the Marist Red Foxes. He helped secure the Rams first weekend sweet of the season, tossing a complete game, five-hit shutout in the victory. He only walked one and struck out five, and managed to do it all by throwing 83 pitches.
He also helped push the Rams to a second consecutive weekend sweep with yet another appearance on Saturday at The Diamond against the Wagner Seahawks. Vial threw a solid 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits, three runs, walking two, and striking out three.
Overall, Vial finished with a 2-0 record, and an ERA of 1.76, helping VCU to a 9-5 record, a clip that tops their opening 14-game performance in their 2015 campaign where they made a Super Regional appearance.
The other pitcher sharing the award with Vial is Charlie Dant of Dayton, while Kevin Mahala from George Washington earned Player of the Week, and Tim Brennan of Saint Joseph's earned Rookie of the Week.
The Rams now face another five games in seven days, beginning Tuesday night, when they travel to VMI. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
