VCU FALLS SHORT IN A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Short Story: VCU took a 5-2 halftime lead over Davidson in the Betterment A-10 Championship game but the Rams were unable to hold off a second half rally from the Wildcats.

OPENING DRAW:
  • VCU played in the A-10 Championship for the first time in program history
  • The Rams 13 wins this season set a program record
  • Rachel Koeneke scored two goals
  • Sam Palmer and Kate Unzicker each had one goal
  • Kenson Epperly had a goal and an assist
  • Lu Doyen made seven saves in goal
  • Koeneke, Palmer and Doyen were named to the A-10 All-Championship Team
  • VCU outshot Davidson 24-22 overall but Davidson led 14-10 in shots on goal. The Wildcats led in draw controls 11-6
  • Davidson was led by Brooke Ross who scored three goals
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Epperly opened the scoring to give VCU a 1-0 lead with 8:43 left in the first quarter
  • The Wildcats answered just 40 seconds later to tie the game 1-1 with 8:03 left
  • The Rams led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter after Unzicker converted a free position
  • VCU outscored the Wildcats 3-1 in the second quarter to build a 5-2 halftime lead following Koeneke's goal with 2:17 remaining
  • The Rams were unable to keep the momentum in the second half as the Wildcats scored eight unanswered goals as part of a comeback victory
