VCU'S DEFENSE SETS PROGRAM MARK IN 13-2 WIN OVER GEORGE MASON

The Short Story: VCU's defense allowed the fewest goals in the program's 11-year history as the Rams suffocated the Patriots' offense in a dominant 13-2 win in their regular season finale.

OPENING DRAW:
  • VCU's two goals allowed are the fewest in a game allowed by the Rams. The previous mark was three in VCU's 18-3 win over Howard in the season opener back on Feb. 10
  • VCU has held opponents to six goals or less in seven of its 16 games this season
  • Rachel Koeneke had three goals and two assists on just five shot attempts
  • Amelia Eilbacher also recorded three goals and an assist
  • Molly O'Keefe and Kiley Kozak each scored two goals while Kozak also had a team-high four draw controls
  • VCU outshot George Mason 39-21 overall and 18-9 in shots on goal. VCU held a 13-5 advantage in draw controls
  • George Mason's Regan Bestick made 11 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eilbacher scored back-to-back goals to open the game and VCU got out to a 4-0 lead with 14:13 left in the second quarter
  • The Patriots scored to make it 4-1 with 9:49 left before halftime but the Rams scored eight unanswered goals and built a 12-1 lead with 5:25 left in the third quarter
  • VCU allowed just nine total shots in the first half and just four shots on goal
  • O'Keefe scored the final goal with 5:26 remaining
