RAMS SWEEP SAINT LOUIS, ADVANCE TO A-10 SEMIFINALS

Final: VCU 4, Saint Louis 0
Location: Richmond, Va. (Thalhimer Tennis Center)
Records: VCU 12-10 (6-0 Atlantic 10), Saint Louis 8-10

The Short Story: VCU women's tennis defeated Saint Louis 4-0, on Thursday evening using a hard-fought doubles point and three straight-set singles victories to secure the sweep.

Opening Serve:
  • Today's match marked the ninth meeting between VCU and Saint Louis in program history, with the Rams having won all of the previous eight matchups, including five at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Saint Louis entered the match hot off a 4-0 win over Saint Joseph's the day prior, but the Rams grabbed the early lead and never let go.
  • VCU continues its push toward another Atlantic 10 title, aiming for its second straight championship and sixth in the last eight seasons. The Rams took a step in the right direction on Thursday night, turning in one of their most complete performances of the season.
Doubles
  • VCU gained the early edge in doubles, with the point decided on Courts 2 and 3. The two courts mirrored each other, as the Rams jumped out to 3-0 leads on both before Saint Louis responded to close the gap to 3-2. From there VCU never gave up the lead as Sofia Jane Thorne and Andrea Magallanes secured a 6-4 win on Court 2, and Sara Alba and Viktoria Lackova followed with a matching 6-4 result on Court 3.
  • On Court 1, similar to the other two, the score sat at 3-2 in favor of VCU, but neither side was able to find the edge before play was halted at 4-4.
Singles
  • VCU carried its momentum into singles and began to separate across the lineup as play went on. Andrea Magallanes was first to finish on Court 4, where from a 3-3 tie in the opening set, she rattled off nine straight games to get the Rams on the board first, closing out a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win to extend the lead.
  • Sara Alba followed on Court 6, striking early with a 6-2 first set and managing the second down the stretch, closing it out 6-4 to secure her third consecutive straight-sets win and bring VCU within a point of victory.
  • Sofia Jane Thorne clinched the match on Court 1. After building a cushion at 4-2 and 5-2, she closed out the opening set 6-2 and carried that same play into the second, winning by the same score to secure her fourth straight victory and the match for VCU.
