RICHMOND, Va. - VCU Men's Tennis freshman
Patrik Petera was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Tuesday following his performances against Duquesne and Saint Joseph's this past weekend.
Petera opened the weekend against Duquesne on Court 1 in doubles, teaming up with
Gevorg Mnatsakanyan for a quick 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point. He then earned a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 victory over Arnau Anton Garcia on Court 5 to help lead the Rams to the team win. Petera carried that momentum into the following match against an in-form Saint Joseph's side, where he posted another dominant result with a 6-1, 6-1 win on Court 5. Across the weekend, Petera went undefeated and conceded just five total games in singles play.
In his first season in Richmond, Petera has been a key part of the lineup, posting a 7-5 singles record and a 4-5 doubles mark. The freshman has won five of his last seven singles matches and continues to build momentum at the right time heading into postseason play.
Prior to VCU, Petera claimed a J60 doubles title in Guatemala, reached J30 doubles finals in both Jamaica and Puerto Rico, ranked No. 14 in the Czech Republic U18 standings, and competed at IMG Academy.
Up Next: Petera and the Rams return to action Thursday in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championships against Saint Louis or Davidson.
