Despite getting its tying run at the plate after two ninth-inning base knocks, Virginia Tech dodged a late VCU baseball rally on Tuesday. The Rams fell 8-6 as the Hokies completed their sweep of the two-game season series. Â
Â
LEADING OFF:
- The top of the lineup belted five of the Rams' hits with Dante DeFranco and Jacob Lee each tallying a pair
- Lee smacked his 10th home run to become just the fifth Ram in program history to have multiple double-digit home run seasons, while tying for seventh all-time with 27 career home runs
- Teige Lethert's two-run shot in the sixth inning was VCU's 45th home run of the season
- Hunter Gotschall tossed 4.0 innings and tied his season-high five strikeouts, giving up just a run and three hits out of the bullpen
- Making scoreless relief appearances, Bryce Carter faced the minimum over 1.1 innings, and Cooper Weygandt allowed a pair of baserunners in 1.2 innings of work
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both teams started the scoring early as Virginia Tech scratched a pair of runs across in the opening inning, before Lee smashed his solo shot to dead center in the home half of the first frame
- The Hokies answered with a solo shot of their own in the second from Ethan Gibson, but an RBI double off the bat of Lee and a VT throwing error allowed the Rams to even the score at 3-3
- Virginia Tech scratched three runs across in the sixth inning and VCU answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame on Lethert's two-run homer to close the deficit to just a run, 6-5
- On a trio of extra-base hits in the eighth, the Hokies concluded their scoring at eight, and the Rams were only able to answer with one run in the bottom of the ninth, falling 8-6
