VCU baseball never trailed Fordham on the weekend, completing its three-game Atlantic 10 sweep by staving off a late comeback bid in Bronx, N.Y., on Sunday to take the series finale by a score of 7-6.
Â
LEADING OFF:
- VCU swept its third Atlantic 10 series of the year
- Everett Vaughan made his longest appearance of the season since returning from injury, going 4.0 scoreless frames with just four hits allowed and striking out three
- Jacob Lee's two-home run game marked his 25th and 26th career home runs, taking sole possession of eighth in program history
- Junior outfielder Michael Petite had his second three-hit game of the weekend and extended his hitting streak to five games
- Zach Peters recorded the final out of the game, fending off Fordham's comeback to pick up his second save of the weekend series
- VCU and Fordham were tied for hits in the game at 10 apiece
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Mimicking Saturday's slow start, the game remained scoreless through three innings until VCU broke it open with a five-run fourth inning
- Teige Lethert led off the frame with a base knock, before Maher and Trent Adelman loaded the bases with a walk and single, respectively, opening the door for DeFranco's two-run single and Lee's three-run home run
- Everett Vaughan hung his fourth zero on the board to conclude his outing, holding onto VCU's comfortable 5-0 lead
- This weekend's likely heroes provided a pair of late VCU runs on Lee's second homer in the seventh inning and a two-out RBI single for Petite's third hit of the game in the eighth
- Fordham pressed VCU with a steady trickle of runs, scoring in each of the final five innings, as VCU led 7-4 entering the final frame
- Fordham came within a run of the visiting Rams in the ninth and Peters entered the game to lock down VCU's final out of the weekend, securing the 7-6 win
