VCU RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST VIRGINIA

Score: Virginia 5, VCU 3
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 4-7, Virginia 10-1

VCU baseball collected 11 hits at home on Sunday, the most surrendered by Virginia in a game this season, but left 12 runners on base to fall short of its second Power 4 victory. The Rams suffered their first loss at home in 2026, 5-3.

LEADING OFF:
  • After a three-hit performance yesterday, Cade Tousa had his second consecutive leadoff hit in as many career starts
  • Nick Flores had a three-hit game, while Nate Kirkpatrick and Dante DeFranco each tallied a pair of base knocks
  • On the mound, Nick Frers threw 3.0 frames without giving up an earned run and matched his career-best five strikeouts
  • The Rams had double-digit strikeouts (11) for the fifth time this season,

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Virginia opened the game with a home run in the first inning, but was held to just two hits over the next three scoreless innings by Fenix DiGiacomo and Frers
  • Aided by an outfield error, UVA scratched an unearned run across in the fifth inning and in the eighth, extended its lead to 5-0 on a home run by right fielder Zach Jackson
  • VCU got on the board in the eighth inning after Quinn Maher rounded the bases on Kirkpatrick's double down the left-field line after drawing a leadoff walk
  • The Rams strung together three consecutive two-out singles in the ninth after Michael Petite drew a walk, scoring a pair to cut the deficit to 5-3
  • With the winning run at the plate, the Rams' rally fell just short as UVA held on to its two-run lead to complete the weekend sweep

UP NEXT
VCU will defend its home turf for the next eight games, taking on William & Mary (March 3) and Old Dominion (March 4) in a pair of midweek games at The Diamond. Both games will feature free admission to the public and the contests will be aired on ESPN.
