RAMS OPEN A-10 PLAY WITH 4-1 WIN OVER GEORGE WASHINGTON

Score: VCU 4 , George Washington 1
Location: Richmond, Va. (Thalhimer Tennis Center)
Records: VCU 5-4 (1-0 Atlantic 10), George Washington 3-4

The Short Story: VCU Women's Tennis delivered a dominant 4-1 win over George Washington in their first Atlantic 10 match of the season.

Opening Serve
  • VCU entered the match at 4-4 on the season, coming off a win over Howard last Saturday, while George Washington arrived following a victory over Loyola Maryland. The contest marked the first Atlantic 10 conference match of the season for both teams and the latest chapter in a series VCU has long controlled. The Rams came in holding a 12-0 advantage in the all-time series, having allowed just seven total points across those meetings. Tuesday's match followed a similar script, as VCU dictated the pace and proved to be the steadier side throughout the afternoon.
Doubles
  • Doubles play opened on Court 1, where Andrea Magallanes and Sofia Jane Thorne delivered a 6-0 victory over George Washington's Madison Lee and Karen Verduzco. With the win, the Rams duo have won 12 of their last 14 games across their previous two doubles matches.
  • Court 2 soon followed, as Mariam Ibrahim and Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando secured a 6-1 victory over George Washington's Skeene Solange and Victoria Sasinka, giving the doubles point to the Rams.
Singles
  • On Court 3, Mariam Ibrahim picked up where she left off in doubles, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory in straight sets. It marked her second consecutive straight-set win, as she has not allowed more than two games in any of her last four singles sets.
  • Sofia Jane Thorne followed on Court 1. After the match opened with what appeared to be a competitive 2-1 start, Thorne quickly took control and did not drop another game, claiming the first set 6-1 and the second 6-0 in another dominant display. Across her last two singles matches, Thorne has allowed just four total games to her opponents.
  • In contrast to Courts 1 and 3, Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando found herself in a back-and-forth contest throughout the afternoon. The first set remained tight at 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4 before Andrade raised her level, winning the final two games to take the opener 6-4 over Madison Lee. Lee responded in the second set to force a deciding third, where the tension mirrored the first. With the score again tied at 4-4, Andrade once again showed she had more in the tank, pulling away late to claim the set 6-4 and clinch the match for the Rams.
  • Andrea Magallanes and Sara Alba were both in front on Courts 5 and 6, respectively, when the match was clinched. Magallanes had secured the first set 7-5, while Alba claimed her opening set 6-3.
