Â
Opening Serve
- Today's match marked the Rams' first road contest of the season after opening the year with five straight home matches. VCU entered the day riding the momentum of a big win over crosstown rival Richmond, while Davidson came in at 1-1, most recently falling 7-0 to Virginia Tech.Â
- The Rams had faced Davidson four times prior to today, winning all four matchups and surrendering just one point in the process, and today's result stayed true to that pattern.
Doubles
- Doubles action began on court two, where Erwann Bouchet and Kostiantyn Mantach earned a 6-4 win over Davidson's Davide Procacci and Charlie Ratliff in their first match together as a VCU pairing this spring.Â
- Right behind them was the duo of Nicolo Consonni and Gevorg Mnatsakanyan, who battled to a 7-5 tiebreak victory over Davidson's Sebast Carpio Moran and Goyo Hidalgo. Playing on court one together for the first time this season, the experienced pair pushed their doubles record to 5-1, continuing their strong start to the spring.
- Similar to the other doubles courts, the third matchup was closely fought from start to finish. Leon Zaorski and Patrik Petera were locked at 5-5, then 6-6, and even 2-2 in the tiebreak before play was halted before either duo could find the edge.
Singles
- Carrying the momentum from doubles, Erwann Bouchet was the first to finish in singles on court two, making quick work of Davide Procacci, 6-2, 6-2. The victory marked Bouchet's fifth singles win in six matches this spring and improved him to a perfect 3-0 on court two.
- Next to finish was Leon Zaorski, who delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win to put the Rams within one point of victory. From the opening serve, Zaorski controlled the match, never allowing momentum to shift.
- With the match nearing its conclusion, Gevorg Mnatsakanyan fell behind early on court 3, dropping the opening set 1-6. When it appeared Davidson's Kai Villagomez had seized the momentum and was poised to put the Wildcats on the board, Mnatsakanyan answered taking the second set 6-2. In the decisive third set, with the match on the line, he stayed composed and closed out a 6-4 victory to clinch the win for VCU, improving his singles record to 5-1 this spring.
- Meanwhile on court one, Nicolo Consonni was locked in a tight contest with the Wildcats' Goyo Hidalgo. Consonni surged to a 6-1 win in the opening set before dropping the second 3-6. With a 4-2 lead in the deciding set, Consonni's match went unfinished after VCU secured the team victory.
