THE SHORT STORY
VCU men's soccer fell for the first time during conference play, dropping a 5-1 match at Fordham on Saturday night. Afonso Taborda scored the lone goal for VCU.

PITCH SIDE
  • Taborda scored his first career goal
  • Andres Rodriguez tallied his first point of the season on the assist
  • VCU was outshot 18-10 with Fordham leading 7-4 in shots on goal
  • Fordham led with three saves to VCU's two
  • Andrey Salmeron, Lucas White and Hakim Musabbah led VCU with two shots apiece
  • All four of VCU's shots on goal were by different Rams

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU trailed by a pair heading into the second half after the home Rams were able to find the back of the net in the 25th and 30th minutes
  • Fordham extended its lead early in the second period, adding 49th- and 54th-minute goals to pull ahead 4-0
  • Rodriguez deflected a Fordham clearance attempt to Taborda, who laced a rocket through traffic 20 yards from the goal to get VCU on the board in the 59th minute, 4-1
  • Making a long run, Fordham scored the final goal of the match in the 83rd minute to give VCU its first loss in A-10 action, 5-1

QUOTABLE
"The third match in six days was always going to be a tough ask, especially considering the energy we had to give in both of the first two. Fordham is a good team and one who is definitely set up to take advantage of the things that we didn't do well enough tonight. We will learn from some things we saw tonight and be better because of them," Head Coach Dave Giffard said.

UP NEXT
VCU will return home to Sports Backers Stadium against La Salle at 7 p.m. on October 4. The Rams will celebrate their senior night and host the Morgan's Message game.
