BYRD, TAYLOR LEAD VCU ON FINAL DAY AT A-10 CHAMPS; RAMS PLACE THIRD

The short story: Senior Eryn Byrd and VCU's 4x100-meter relay quartet captured gold, while senior Lauryn Taylor scored in three different events, to lead VCU to a third-place finish Sunday at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in Fairfax.
 
THROWS
  • Byrd vaulted into the lead with a toss of 14.33 meters on her second attempt and never looked back. On her fifth try, she cemented her victory with her mark of 14.91. It's the fifth A-10 shot put title of her decorated career, but first outdoors. She also collected bronze in the discus with season-best heave of 43.93 meters
  • VCU junior Anaya Harris threw 43.67 in the discus to take fourth
  • Junior Like Matalatala matched her best result in an A-10 Championship meet, placing fourth in the shot put with a mark of 14.00 meters
SPRINTS
  • The VCU quartet of Mabel Alagbe, Lauryn Taylor, Asia Powell and Kayelyn Tate ran its best 400-meter relay of the spring, clocking 45.57 to pull away from Dayton (45.92) for the gold
  • Taylor (11.68) and Powell (11.93) captured second and fourth, respectively, in the 100 for VCU. Taylor also placed fifth in the 200 in 24.52, while Powell (25.21) was eighth
  • Freshman Indira O'Neil equaled her season best in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 14.19 on the way to a sixth-place finish
  • Sophomore Jaliyah Person placed eighth in the 400 for the Rams
  • Junior Nia Warren claimed eighth in the 800 in 2:13.15 
JUMPS
  • Junior Sydney Carr leaped 12.12 meters on her third attempt to place fourth in the triple jump. Sophomore Damoilola Ogbeta and junior Prissy Mpofu were sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Black and Gold in the event
  • Junior Mariah Washington equaled her personal best of 1.65 meters and took seventh in the high jump

Jailah Channer earned an eighth-place finish in the heptathlon
