The short story:Â VCU fell behind George Mason after the Patriots used a 15-3 run midway through the second quarter. The Rams got no closer than a 53-42 deficit with 6:08 left in the game.

- VCU climbed back within 15-10 following a Hutson 3-pointer and trailed 19-13 after the first
- The Patriots pulled away in the second quarter using a 15-3 run to take a 30-13 lead with 3:31 left before halftime
- George Mason led VCU 33-18 at the break
- VCU got within 42-30 before a 7-0 Mason run extended their lead back to 49-30 with 3:29 left in the third quarter
- The Rams got back within 53-42 on an Ojeda layup with 6:08 left after a 7-0 run. Mason scored its first points of the fourth with 5:45 left in the game
- VCU got no closer for the remainder of the contest
