The short story: VCU trailed George Washington 46-41 with 3:42 left in the third quarter but used an 11-0 run to retake the lead 52-46. The Rams never trailed again as they held off the Revolutionaries for the win.
 
OPENING TIP:
  • Zoli Khalil scored a career-high 21 points team-high seven points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 from 3-point range
  • Mary-Anna Asare had 18 points and seven rebounds
  • Grace Hutson had 16 points and grabbed a career-high seven boards
  • The Rams went 16-of-23 from the free throw line while the Revolutionaries were 8-of-16
  • VCU outscored GW 15-2 in fast break points

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Rams opened the game on a 9-2 run capped off by a Grace Hutson 3-pointer with 7:44 left in the first quarter
  • VCU took a 17-9 lead following a Khalil 3-pointer with 4:49 left in the first quarter. The Revolutionaries trimmed the Rams' lead to 19-16 at the end of the quarter
  • Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor in the second quarter in a back-and-forth battle. The Rams held a slim 37-36 lead heading into the break after a Hutson jumper with four seconds left
  • GW had taken a 46-41 lead over VCU in the third before VCU used a 11-0 run capped by a pair of Khalil free throws to lead 52-46 with 1:21 left in the third quarter
  • VCU never allowed the Revolutionaries to get closer than four points for the remainder of the game and pulled away late after a Hutson 3-pointer gave VCU a 62-55 lead with 1:15 left
