The short story: Junior outside hitter
Julia Rienks blasted 15 kills, but it wasn't enough for VCU to hold off Virginia Tech Friday night in front of 1,100 at the Siegel Center.
Â
FIRST SERVE
- Rienks, a transfer from Daytona State College, accounted for a third of VCU's kills on the night. She hit .200 in 35 swings and also served up three aces
- Graduate middle blocker Jasmine Knight added nine kills and two blocks for the Black and Gold
- Sophomore libero Anja Kujundzic provided spirited back-row play and racked up 18 digs for the Rams, while freshman Lara Del Core supplied seven kills, and freshman setter Abby Edwards dished out 34 assists
- Hailey Pearce sparked the Hokies with a match-high 16 kills
THE DIFFERENCE
- Virginia Tech outhit VCU .238-.172
- The Hokies also registered 16 aces in the match and outblocked the Rams 11.5 to 3.0
- VCU hit .286 in the first set on the way to an early lead, but the Black and Gold faded late, hitting a combined .101 in the final two frames – both losses
- The Rams looked poised to grab a 2-1 advantage when they stormed to a 14-11 lead in the third set, but Virginia Tech responded with two straight kills from Sarah Malinowski amid a 7-0 blitz and never looked back on the way to a 25-21 win
- The Hokies closed the second stanza with six straight points to erase a 20-19 VCU lead
- VCU staved off four set points in the first and eventually closed out a 26-24 win when Rienks sandwiched a pair of aces around a kill by KnightÂ
NOTABLE
- VCU's announced crowd of 1,105 is its largest since 1,134 saw the Rams take on George Washington on Oct. 14, 2018
- Knight was honored in a pregame ceremony for recording her 1,000th career kill last weekend at Arizona. She is the ninth player in school history to reach that mark
NEXT UP
VCU will host Winthrop on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Siegel Center in its weekend finale.
