MEN’S SOCCER BATTLES BACK TO 1-1 DRAW AT CAMPBELL

Box Score: RV VCU 1, Campbell 1
Location: Buies Creek, N.C. / Eakes Athletic Complex
Records:  VCU (2-1-2), Campbell (4-0-2)

THE SHORT STORY: VCU earned a hard-fought point on the road, battling an undefeated Campbell team to a 1-1 draw, coming back from an early deficit

PITCH SIDE
  • VCU goalkeeper John Ermini recorded seven saves, tying his career single-game high
  • Lucas White scored the Rams' 50th-minute goal on his first of two shots on goal
  • Captain William Hitchcock recorded the assist on the Rams' game-tying goal
  • Midfielder Andrey Salmeron recorded a pair of shots, raising his season total to 13
  • For the fourth time this season, the Rams held their opponent to just one goal
  • The Rams turned up the intensity in the second half, allowing just four shots from the Fighting Camels and adding five of their own
  • Campbell maintained its unbeaten record with the draw, advancing to 4-0-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A shot from six yards out in the 15th minute was good for Ermini's first phenomenal save of the match, keeping it scoreless early
  • Campbell opened the scoring in the 25th minute of the contest as Filipe Matos laced the Camels' lone goal past Ermini from the 18-yard line
  • White erased VCU's deficit just five minutes into the second half, scoring a 50th-mintue goal on a feed from Hitchcock
  • The Rams added a pair of shots in the 78th and 79th minutes, as Gerardo Castillo's was blocked and Andrey Salmeron's bent just wide to the left

QUOTABLE
"A really good second half from us tonight and deservedly got the goal back right away and probably should have taken another just after. Unfortunately, as a coach, I tried to make adjustments to how we played in a few different phases of the game based on what we saw in the game vs. Akron and a few other times in the last 12 months. Some of the adjustments went very well and, quite frankly, some didn't. That had a lot to do with some of the difficulties we had during the first half and so as I told the team, the first half was on me. We'll learn from the good and the bad and get ourselves ready for the next challenge over the next several days." – VCU Head Coach Dave Giffard
