THILGES, WEISNER HOMERS NOT ENOUGH TO SLOW ODU

Score: Old Dominion 14, VCU 8
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 28-20 (10-7 Atlantic 10), ODU (26-21)

The short story: Home runs by redshirt junior Jake Thilges and graduate outfielder Eli Weisner weren't enough to slow down a hot ODU offense on Tuesday night at the Diamond.

LEADING OFF
  • Senior infielder Brandon Eike led the VCU offense, going 3-for-5
  • VCU junior infielder Casey Kleinman and Thilges each went 1-for-3. Thilges' homer was his second of the season, while Weisner's was his fourth
  • Redshirt freshman Devan Zirwas, senior infielder Will Bean, and Eike each punched an RBI double for the Black and Gold
THE STRETCH
  • VCU tied the game at 3-3 in the second inning on Bean's RBI double to center. Earlier in the inning, Thilges and Weisner hit solo homers
  • Eike ripped an RBI double in the fifth to bring home freshman Chris McHugh. The Monarchs held a 7-4 lead after five frames of play
  • Old Dominion scored seven more runs over the next three innings to take a comfortable 14-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth
  • Zirwas hit a pinch-hit RBI double to left center to spark a four-run VCU ninth
NOTABLE
Eike is now one double shy of tying VCU's single-season mark of 26
