VCU BLASTS RICHMOND, COMPLETES DOMINANT RUN TO A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP

Atlantic 10 Conference Championship
Score: #2 VCU 16, #4 Richmond 1
Location: Tysons, Va. (Capital One Park)
Records: VCU 37-21, Richmond 27-32

The short story: Tournament Most Outstanding Player Brandon Eike homered and drove in three runs to spark a 16-hit VCU barrage as blew out Richmond to capture its third Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in three seasons Saturday at Capital One Park.

LEADING OFF
  • Eike tied a bow on his blistering A-10 Tournament performance with a 3-for-6 day at the plate. In addition to his fifth home run of the tournament, Eike singled, doubled and drove in three runs, while scoring three times.
  • A senior from Powhatan, Va., Eike went 12-for-19 with five homers, eight RBIs and 11 runs scored in four A-10 tournament games this week
  • Senior centerfielder Cooper Benzin homered and tripled on the way to a six-RBI day for the Black and Gold, while sophomore right fielder Aden Hill finished 4-for-5 and drove in a pair
  • Senior righthander Nick Consentino (3-1) started and twirled five shutout innings – his longest outing of the season -- for the Black and Gold. He held the Spiders to just three hits and struck out five
THE STRETCH
  • VCU erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth to break a scoreless game wide open. The Rams had already plated three runs, including an Eike RBI single, by the time Benzin stepped to the plate and blooped a bases-clearing triple into short right field to make it 6-0. Two batters later, senior shortstop William Bean yanked a two-run homer down the left field line
  • Whatever doubt remained, VCU removed with a seven-run top of the ninth that included a three-run homer by Benzin
  • The Rams used 16 hits to plate a season-high 16 runs
NOTABLE
  • The title is VCU's fourth since joining the Atlantic 10 Conference prior to the 2013 season. The Rams will now prepare for the 14th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and the first under second-year Head Coach Bradley LeCroy
  • VCU outscored its opponents 44-13 in four games this week on the way to the title
  • The Rams have won a record 11 consecutive A-10 Tournament games
  • Eike's ninth-inning double was his 27th of the season, a new program single-season record. With five home runs this week, he's moved into eighth place on the Rams' career list with 25, and sixth on the program's single-season list with 14
  • In addition to Eike, who was the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, VCU's Christian Gordon, Eli Weisner, Consentino and Bean were named to the A-10's All-Tournament Team
