GAME ONE RECAP – VCU 11, RICHMOND 4
The short story: Senior third baseman
Brandon Eike reached base five times and tied VCU's single-season doubles mark, while freshman first baseman
Chris McHugh homered and drove in four as the Rams battered Richmond pitching for 18 hits in Friday's opener.

LEADING OFF
- Eike singled twice, doubled and drew a pair of walks in a 3-for-4 effort. He also drove in three runs. He's driven in a team-high 53 runs this season. His second-inning double was his 26th of the season, which moved him into a tie with Jose Pabon atop the Rams' single-season list. Pabon has held the mark since 2002
- McHugh finished 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. He scored three times
- Redshirt junior Jake Thilges also collected three hits for VCU, while graduate DH Eli Weisner doubled and drove in a pair
- Senior lefty Christian Gordon improved to 6-2 after throwing three no-hit innings. He allowed one run and struck out five
THE STRETCH
- VCU jumped on Richmond pitching early and often. The Rams' first four batters reached base, including an RBI single from Eike and a two-run double by Weisner, as the Black and Gold stormed to a 3-0 lead before recording an out. VCU never trailed in the game
- Eike added his record-tying double to right center in the second inning to score McHugh and stake the Rams to a 4-0 lead
- Richmond chipped back to within 8-4, but VCU senior shortstop William Bean led off the ninth with a double to left center, and junior second baseman Casey Kleinman walked to set the stage for McHugh. The right-handed hitting Long Island native promptly hammered a knee-high 2-1 pitch deep into the wooded area beyond the left field fence for a three-run homer, his fourth of the season

The short story: Kleinman blasted a three-run home run, while the VCU bullpen allowed just one run in six innings as the Rams completed the doubleheader sweep Friday at Pitt Field.

LEADING OFF
- Weisner led an 11-hit VCU attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. He recorded a pair of doubles and drove in one run
- Graduate centerfielder Cooper Benzin and Bean each scored twice and recorded a pair of RBIs for the Black and Gold
- Junior lefty Cade Dressler and sophomore righty Evan Peters combined to allow just one run over the final six innings for VCU. Dressler surrendered two hits and struck out six in 3.2 innings, while Peters no-hit the Spiders for the final 2.1 frames. He fanned twoÂ
THE STRETCH
- The Rams fell behind 3-1 in the second, but rallied with a run in the third and two each in the fourth and fifth. Kleinman helped give VCU a 4-3 advantage when Richmond couldn't corral his line drive to left field in the fourth, which allowed two runs to score
- Kleinman put a bow on VCU's performance in the seventh, when he ripped a 3-2 fastball over the right centerfield fence for a three-run homer

VCU's regular season is complete. The Rams will await the conclusion of league play on Saturday to learn their seed for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament May 21-25 in Tysons, Va.
