Nick Cosentino delivered nearly flawless relief out of the Rams' bullpen, but it wasn't enough for VCU Tuesday at Old Dominion.
LEADING OFF
- Cosentino, a transfer from Charlotte, entered the game in the second inning and shut out the Monarchs for 4.1 innings. He surrendered just two hits and one walk, while striking out four
- Sophomore righty Cam Nuckols also turned in 1.2 scoreless innings out of the 'pen for the Black and Gold. He did not allow a hit
- Sophomore right fielder Aden Hill drove in VCU's lone run, while senor third baseman Brandon Eike finished 1-for-3
- Kenny Levari drove in three to lead the Monarchs
THE STRETCH
- The game began in promising fashion for VCU. Redshirt junior Griffin Boone was hit by pitch to lead off the game and advanced to second on a passed ball. Three batters later, Hill lined a single up the middle to score Boone
- The Monarchs evened the score in the bottom half of the first and took a 2-1 lead on a TJ Aiken RBI single in the second
- ODU eventually pulled away with a five-run seventh that including a three-run double by Levari
- VCU recorded just two base hits on the evening, and the Rams were struck out 12 times by ODU pitching. VCU left 10 runners on base
