The short story: VCU Baseball could not get the bats going in its midweek match up, falling at Longwood to snap its seven-game winning streak and split the season series with Lancers.

LEADING OFF
  • Sophomore Maison Martinez threw 4.0 innings out of the pen, striking out five while just giving up one earned run
  • Redshirt junior Jack Hoeymans finished the game, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames over the final innings, striking out two while giving up just two hits
  • Freshman Chris McHugh led the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-4 and the VCU first baseman flashed the leather making a handful of solid plays at first
  • Longwood's Noah Campanelli led the Lancers at the dish, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs
THE STRETCH
  • Longwood scored their first two runs in the third and tacked on two more in the seventh to build its 4-0 lead that stuck after nine innings
  • Junior James McGrady battled from the start, going 2.2 innings with three strikeouts, giving way to Martinez in the third
  • Martinez kept the Lancers off the board over the fourth through sixth frames keeping the window open for VCU to climb back into the game
  • But VCU struggled to get runners on base, leaving just three on while having only five reach safely over the nine innings
  • The Rams' lack of getting on base would end up causing them the game as they could not get back into things despite solid VCU pitching that kept things close throughout
NOTABLE
  • Martinez's one earned run was the first the sophomore has given up this season
