Maison Martinez fired four-plus innings of lights-out relief, while senior shortstop
William Bean two-run double in the seventh broke open a close game Friday at The Diamond.

LEADING OFF
- Martinez entered in the third and dealt 4.1 innings of two-hit, shutout relief. He struck out six and walked one
- Redshirt senior catcher Nic Ericsson supplied three hits (3-for-3) and drove in one for the Rams
- VCU junior third baseman Brandon Eike reached base three times a double and two walks. He scored twice
- Bean finished 1-for-5 on the day, while graduate DH Eli Weisner was 1-for-3 and drove in a run for the Black and Gold
- Senior lefty Campbell Ellis started on the mound for VCU and provided 2.2 scoreless innings. He struck out a pair
- Sacred Heart's Peter Link (1-for-4) was responsible for the Pioneers' two runs when he tripled down the right field line
THE STRETCH
- After a walk and a hit batter to open the bottom of the sevenths, Bean rapped a double off the left field wall to score a pair and push VCU's lead to 3-0. Graduate centerfielder Cooper Benzin and Ericsson followed with back-to-back RBI singles through the left side to expand the Rams' advantage to 5-0
- Sacred Heart scored twice in the top half of the fifth to draw within 5-2, but in the bottom of the inning, Eike walked and sophomore right fielder Aden Hill doubled to put Rams on the corners. A short time later, senior left fielder Ethan Iannuzzi lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Eike
- Weisner spotted VCU a 1-0 lead with a sac sac fly in the first
- VCU pitching allowed just six hits on the day and struck out 11

- The Rams are 4-1 at The Diamond this season
- Martinez has tossed 12 scoreless innings, giving up just six hits and striking out 15 over his first two appearances of the season
