HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mary-Anna Asare's 3-pointer helped VCU start the game on a 9-2 run and the Rams led by that margin with 7:53 left in the first quarter
- Rhode Island fought back, cutting VCU's lead to 16-10 at the end of the first
- Rhode Island got as close as 20-16 in the second quarter before VCU went on a 19-6 run capped off by a pair of Mykel Parham free throws
- VCU took a 39-25 lead into the half after shooting 5-of-10 from 3-point range and 42 percent from the field overall
- VCU pushed its lead over URI to as much as 57-37 with 1:58 left in the third quarter after Lucía Sotelo free throws
- Rhode Island tried to fight back, going on an 8-0 to cut the VCU lead to 65-55, an 18-7 run, with 2:25 remaining
- VCU held off Rhode Island's rally, never letting them get closer than 10 points for the remainder of the game
