The short story:Â VCU Baseball dropped its season opener at #13 NC State, as the Wolfpack used a four run fourth inning to pull away from the Rams.
LEADING OFF
- Redshirt junior Jack Hoeymans made his Division I debut, tossing three scoreless innings out of the pen, striking out one while allowing just one hit
- Junior Casey Kleinman got his first hit at the Division I level, scoring VCU's first run of the season
- Redshirt freshman Devan Zirwas got his first career base knock, while senior William Bean got his first hit of the season out of the way
- Junior Everett Vaughan got the start, his first in the black and gold, going three innings, giving up just one earned run while tossing 55 pitches
- NC State catcher Jacob Cozart and designated hitter Alex Sosa each got a pair of knocks, while Cozat added a home run
THE STRETCH
- VCU got the scoring started in the first inning and it got started with a leadoff single from Kleinman. The Ram second basemen would advance to third on back-to-back VCU walks and courtesy of a sacrifice fly by freshman Chris McHugh, Kleinman crossed the plate for the first VCU run of 2024
- NC State scored in first to tie the game up at 1-1 on an RBI single to fight by Sosa
- In the fourth the game was decided, Matt Heavner led off the inning with solo shot to left, to give NC State its first lead of the game. The Wolfpack would then go on to score three more runs in the frame to pull ahead and grab a 5-1 lead
- The Wolfpack added one more in the eighth when Cozart smacked a solo home run to right field, making it 6-1, a score that would stick past the final out.
NOTABLE
- Redshirt senior catcher Nic Ericsson picked up where he left off last season, throwing out his first runner of the season in a steal attempt of second
- Redshirt senior Cooper Benzin, Bean, Ericsson, and sophomore Aden Hill all reached base, extending their respective reached base streaks that had carried over from 2023
- Hoeymans, sophomore Phil Forbes V, Kleinman, McHugh, graduate Ethan Iannuzzi and Zirwas all made their Division I collegiate debuts
NEXT UP
The Rams remain in Raleigh for the second game of the weekend series, with Saturday's game against the Wolfpack set for a 2 p.m. first pitch. The game will again be broadcast on ACCNX.
