RAMS DOMINATE HORNETS IN 79-43 WIN

The short story: The Rams used a dominant second quarter and put together their highest single-game scoring output of the season to run past Delaware State Monday night.
 
OPENING TIP:
  • Mary-Anna Asare scored in double-figures for the eighth time in 10 games this season, leading VCU with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field
  • Freshman guard Cyriah Griffin scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting off the bench
  • Zoli Khalil notched six points, five rebounds and tied her career-high for assists with three
  • The Rams had their most effective offensive output of the season, scoring a season-high 79 points on a season-best 57 percent shooting from the floor

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU went on a 21-0 run spanning between the first and second quarters, lasting for a total of 8:20 of game time
  • During that span, VCU went from trailing 15-11 with 4:13 left in the first quarter to leading 32-15 with five minutes left before halftime during the run
  • A Cyriah Griffin 3-pointer with five seconds left in the second quarter gave the Rams a 41-20 lead heading into halftime. Griffin scored seven of her 15 points in the final 2:32 of the first half
  • The Rams used an 11-2 run out of the halftime break to extend their lead to 52-22, which was capped by a second-chance layup from Jennifer Ezeh
 
NOTABLE:
  • VCU held the Hornets to five points in the second quarter, marking their best single-quarter defensive performance of the season
  • 43 points marks the lowest single-game total allowed by the Rams this season
