The short story: VCU led San Diego State 26-22 at halftime but struggled offensively in the second half as the Aztecs used a 9-0 run across a 10-minute stretch to take the lead and hold off VCU.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• VCU and San Diego State went back-and-forth in a frantic first quarter with the Aztecs leading 14-10 with 2:28 left
• The Rams closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 16-10 after Valentina Ojeda beat the first quarter buzzer on a layup
• VCU built a 24-18 lead after a pair of Mykel Parham free throws with 4:18 left. The Rams took a 26-22 lead into halftime
• The Rams struggled offensively in the third quarter as the Aztecs shot 57.1 percent from the floor and used a 10-2 run to take a 41-34 lead
• The Rams went scoreless for just over 10 minutes between 5:37 left in the third quarter until 5:28 in the fourth quarter as the Aztecs took control of the contest
