RAMS FINISH STRONG AT NO. 12 VIRGINIA

THE SHORT STORY: VCU Women's Soccer dropped a top-25 matchup at No. 12 Virginia, losing 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
 
PITCH SIDE
 
  • Kanna Matsuhisa got VCU on the board in the 46th minute with her first goal of the season
  • Matsuhisa collected three shots, with two on goal to lead VCU
  • The Rams recorded six shots on goal with nine overall shots
  • During the second half the Rams out shot the Cavaliers six to four and had three shots on goal while keeping Virginia off net
  • VCU earned a game-high five corners
  • Mia Pongratz made her collegiate debut, playing the entire second half
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Virginia scored all four of their goals in the first half, getting goals in the first, fourth, 12th and 32nd minutes
  • In the 46th minute, Virginia's keeper, Victoria Safradin (who took over at halftime) misplayed a ball that took her wide left and out of her net. In an attempt to clear the ball, she instead found Matsuhisa
  • The VCU forward took one touch past a defender then confidently smashed it home into the empty net to get the Rams on the board
  • Despite the score, the Rams kept pushing throughout the second half, out shooting Virginia and putting three shots on goal
  • Jazzy Jackson ripped a shot that was cleared off the line in the 48th minute
  • In the 69th minute Matsuhisa took a shot from the right side that was kept out by the UVA keeper
  • And in the final minutes, with VCU still pushing the tempo, Anna Bagley took a shot in the 77th minute that was saved
 
UP NEXT: VCU returns home on Thursday, Sept. 7 with another top-25 matchup when No. 3 Stanford visits Sports Backers Stadium with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
