Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

KANAGWA NETS FIRST CAREER GOAL IN 1-1 DRAW AT ODU

Score: VCU 1, Old Dominion 1
Location: Norfolk, Va. (ODU Soccer Complex)
Records: VCU 0-3-4, Old Dominion 2-0-5

THE SHORT STORY: Behind Jonathan Kanagwa's first career goal, VCU Men's Soccer earned a 1-1 draw at Old Dominion in a midweek non-conference match up, extending the Rams' unbeaten streak to two matches.

"Tonight, we were excellent in almost every phase of the game," said Head Coach Dave Giffard. "We need to get more clinical in the final third however as we should have been up three or four goals at the half, but we didn't take the chances and allowed them to stay in the game.

"We controlled the game from start to finish, we created chances, we gave them almost nothing, but one slip and giveaway in a bad area leads to their only chance to score late in the game and they do. This group has a lot of special qualities and is going to be top, but right now we just have to keep going and making gains from one day to the next and the tide will turn for us when we earn it and when it does, we will start to roll."

PITCH SIDE
  • Kanagwa's goal came in the 61st minute
  • The 61st minute goal was assisted by Camilo Comi, his second of the season
  • VCU put four shots on goal, while holding ODU to three
  • Papa Toure and Seni Joseph joined Kanagwa and Comi with shots on goal
  • The Rams earned seven corners while ODU only created two
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams outshot the Monarchs during the first half, ripping off five shots as they opened the game by pushing the tempo
  • In the ninth minute, Comi got the first of three shots on goal by a Ram in the first half as he tested the ODU keeper
  • During the 28th minute, Joseph put one on net as the Rams continued to search for the opening goal
  • As the half came to an end, Toure took a shot (35th minute) that was saved by ODU's keeper and as the half finished off the score remained tied at 0-0
  • After ODU got three shots around the 55th minute, VCU got the goal they were searching for
  • Taking a pass from Comi, Kanagwa got off a shot that found the bottom right of the net to put the Rams up 1-0
  • Both sides traded shots over the next 20 minutes, but in the 85th minute Old Dominion got an equalizer to make it 1-1
  • Kanagwa's goal and the late ODU equalizer meant the match ended knotted at 1-1
UP NEXT: VCU remains on the road with an Atlantic 10 matchup at UMass on Sept. 23. The Rams then return home on Sept. 27 to play host of No. 1 Marshall at Sports Backers Stadium.
